The Church has taken some pretty big hits over the last twenty years or so. Who has not heard of Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart, just to name a couple? These folks were quite visible, and when they fell to sin, many people lost faith in the Church as a whole. I’m not taking anything away from the horrific damage these men (and others) have done, but we’d be fools to think that they’re the only folks up to no good! The Word of God is replete with examples of near total corruption from the heads of government, down through the church, and right into the people below them. One thing always holds true though…. no matter how unrighteous God’s people may become, God is still 100% righteous, and all his motives are 100% pure. If your faith has taken a hit because of something that has happend in the Church, take care to remember that God is still sovereign, and He still wants you to draw close to Him, regardless of what everyone else is doing.
“Woe to the city of oppressors [Jerusalem], rebellious and defiled: She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God. Her officials are roaring lions, her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning. Her prophets are arrogant; they are treacherous men. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law. The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.” Zephaniah 3:1-5
