Your Sins Are Hurting Other Peopl!

I hear a lot of folks talking about their sins as if they’re the only ones effected by them.  You’ve probably heard people do the same thing.  They say things like, “It’s MY LIFE, let me do with it what I want.”  I guess on the surface that sounds pretty good.  At times I’m sure I’ve even thought the same thing.  The interesting thing here is that God’s word is full of places where it talks about our sins effecting others.  Our sin effects those around us, our children, and even the children we haven’t even thought of yet!  Check this out!

“However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow his commands… The fruit of your womb will be cursed.”  Dueteronomy 28:15-18

Witnessing

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

Interesting point here.   Jesus sends us out to be His witnesses, just like the apostles before us. Notice though, He didn’t call us to be judges, prosecutors, bailifs, or even court reporters.  Those jobs have already been filled!  We are called to be witnesses.  Witnesses don’t get involved in the running of the court, they just share the truth when their told.

Need Help With Your Prayers?

What ever happened to “submission?” It seems to me that in any civilized society there has to be submission to… and respect for authority. Still, these days submission seems very rare. Mostly I hear people talking about what they “Won’t do!” I learned submission from my parents. It wasn’t pretty, but I learned it! Later, it was reinforced in my nearly 20 years in the military… and I think it’s helped me with my walk with Christ.

“Slaves [or workers of today], obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.” Ephesians 6:5

If It’s The Lord’s Will

If you took a survey and asked people what they were going to do tomorrow, or maybe even this weekend, I bet most of them could give you the “who, what, why, when, where and how” of the whole plan.  Here’s some interesting Scripture on that thought process.

“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.'”  James 4:13

(Or maybe my annotated version will make it clearer…)

“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow [when] we [who], will go to this or that city [where], spend a year there [how], carry on business [what] and make money [why].'”  James 4:13

Sometimes it seems like we’ve got it all figured out!  We don’t even know if we’ll breath another breath!

Here’s the “rest of the story.”

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.  What is your life?  You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’  As it is, you boast and brag.  All such boasting is evil.”  James 4:14-16

One Life to Live

bridge, river sunset

“Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.”  1 Peter 2:17

When I was young, my mother and grandmother used to remind me to use my manners with the gentle reminder, “Use your manners, Jimmy!”  I’ve seen a drastic loss of simple manners and respect among people in my lifetime.  People treat friends and family badly, and they often treat strangers even worse. In the past, while running teen organizations, I’ve been cursed by kids who aren’t even old enough to attend junior high school.  What’s worse, I’ve been cursed by their parents as well! Manners and respect are more than just nice things to give others; they are in fact biblical commands.  If we lose our manners, we begin to see a slide in the way people in society as a whole treat each other.  If that lack of respect grows, people begin to be hard-hearted toward one another.  The result is people who feel unloved, and refuse to love anyone else, including Christ.  Believe it or not, just using your manners may be one of the best witnesses you have.

“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.”  Philippians 1:27

Okay

There’s an old psychology concept called “I’m OK, You’re OK” that basically teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated.  Of course, it was Jesus who first coined/invented the concept, but without getting stuck on that, I wonder how many would be Christians never really embrace the Lord because they think too highly of themselves.  The “I’m OK” seems to move toward, “I’m awesome!” and the “You’re OK” seems to move toward, “You’re not as good as me.”  Well, the Bible has plenty to say on the subject, but the bottom line is this.  Apart from God, we are far less than “Okay!”

“What shall we conclude then?  Are we any better?  Not at all!  We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin.  As it is written:  ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.  All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.'”  Romans 3:9-13

Our Charge?

time lapse of interstate

We live in crazy times!  It seems like vast groups of people want to decide what truth is and then push that truth on everyone else.  If it pleases them, they want to do it!  Even those who should know the truth, like ministers, teachers, prophets, etc. are spouting all sorts of craziness and calling it “truth”.  Fortunately for Christians, we have the real Truth to grasp onto, but many of us are deceived into being timid about sharing it–no doubt fearing persecution.  But, like a rock in a raging storm, Jesus (Truth) is our only hope.  He’s also the only hope of a lost and hurting world, listening to the crazy voices around them.  Our charge remains the same:

“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction.  For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.  But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”  2 Timothy 4:1-5

Death

Sunset Lake Sky Hills

Somewhere in your adolescent years you probably realized that your life would one day come to an end. It’s not a pleasant experience for most, and it certainly wasn’t for me! It was scary! I remember that it happened near when my great grandmother died–It was the first time I had to deal with death. The uncertainty of “life after death” and especially that whole being buried in a coffin didn’t set well with me. Fortunately, even for the newest Christian, one of the first signs the Spirit of God is in you is a gentle loss of the fear of death. What could death do to us anyway? Sure, I’d rather die in some quiet and peaceful way, but in the end it won’t really matter. For the believer, death is simply another beginning! A beginning where we will once and for all be rid of the sin we struggle with–The beginning of an eternity with Christ.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.” Jesus of Nazareth (Revelation 2:11)

Undignified?

Imagine you turn on the news and watch as the leader of the free world dances down the street in his underwear!  Absolutely everyone is shocked!  Some cry for immediate impeachment.  Others cry “he’s insane!”   But that’s not the weirdest thing.  Some seem not only to understand his actions, but 30,000 others join in–actually following him down the city streets!  As crazy as it seems, this is only partly fiction!  Overcome with the joy that can only come from God, King David danced in the city streets so vigorously, his robe fell off, leaving him dancing in his underwear in front of everyone!  How undignified!  His own wife seeing him from a window mocked him.  To which he said, “I will celebrate before the LORD.  I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.”  (2 Samuel 6:21b-22)  And yet we find in our day and time, it’s simply unacceptable even to speak of God outside of a church or worship center.  How far we’ve slipped from where God would have us is known only to Him.  This I know for sure though, I will become even more undignified than this!”  Will “political correctness” stop you from dancing for the Lord?

“David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD , she despised him in her heart… When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, ‘How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!’ David said to Michal, ‘It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel-I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.’ And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.”  2 Samuel 6:14-22
