“They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!’
‘Be Quiet!’ said Jesus sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.” Mark 1:21-26
The first couple of times I read this scripture I thought to myself, “O.K. Jesus cast out an evil spirit. He’ll do that a lot more before I get through reading the gospels.” After reading a little further, it becomes obvious that Jesus was keeping His true identity under wraps. Had his identity been common knowledge, the political and religious turmoil would have destroyed God’s plan to redeem us. It appears from Jesus’ reaction that this evil spirit was actually trying to spoil the plan and reveal Him prematurely. Besides that fact, even if it was time, Jesus didn’t need or want testimony from Satan or his angels. When the time came, God Himself testified for His Son!
