When I was a boy, my friends and I used to play a really ridiculous game. To start the game, someone simply needed to put someone else in a headlock, or do just about any other painful thing. Then, after they got the victim screaming, they’d yell, “mercy?” If the wounded party didn’t say, “mercy” back, then they just did whatever they were doing even harder. All the while, the remainder of the crowd would be yelling, “Just say mercy! Just say mercy!” Of course, a “real man” would hold out as long as possible, no matter how much pain, and no matter how many people screamed for him to “give!”
How many people can you think of right now that are playing this same game with God? Maybe God is dealing them heartache after heartache, calling them home with every moment of the day, and they just won’t cry “mercy!” Well, as many of you know, I did the same thing for many years. Maybe you did it, too, or are still doing it. The bottom line is this: God has already had mercy on us. Just like in the childhood game though, we still have to ask for it. Christ has already paid the penalty for us, we simply need to “give,” and let Him take the wheel of our lives.
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5
