I heard a guy speaking with a friend of his the other day about some difficult times he was getting ready to face. After a minute or two of lamenting, I heard the friend he was speaking to remark, “Well, it doesn’t seem like there’s much I can do for you. I guess I could lift you up in prayer.” Interesting… would he only lift him up in prayer as a last resort? How about as a first resort!
I can find three different types of prayer in the Bible: personal, unceasing, and corporate. Incidentally, we are to be about all three. Here’s an example of how the early church prayed corporately, and what happened when they did.
“On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. ‘Sovereign Lord,’ they said, ‘you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them… Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through he name of your holy servant Jesus.’ After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Acts 4:23-31
